The grant is administered by Justice for Police Officer Daniel Faulkner, Inc. (a non-profit Pennsylvania corporation that has received 501(c)(3) status from the IRS) which was organized in 1998 to honor the memory of Daniel Faulkner and spread the truth about the manner in which he died. Police Officer Faulkner was a member of the Philadelphia Police Department and was killed in the line of duty in 1981. Michael's 1999 Tribute to Police Officer Daniel Faulkner

On December 9, 1981, a Philadelphia police officer named Daniel Faulkner was brutally murdered after a routine car stop. In 1982, Mumia Abu-Jamal was tried and convicted for Officer Faulkner's murder, and was himself (appropriately) sentenced by a jury to receive the death penalty. Ever since, Jamal's "cause" has become the subject of an international campaign of misinformation led by the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Mike Farrell, and Ed Asner.

Fast forward to 1999: Fed up with the prospect of a so-called million person march for a convicted cop killer, Michael decided to do something about it. Michael organized a fund raising tribute dinner in the name of Daniel Faulkner which took place Friday, April 23, 1999. More than 800 people paid $100 per person to attend and honor the life of Daniel Faulkner. Guests included Maureen Faulkner, Officer Faulkner's widow, and a number of other Faulkner family members, including Danny's brothers Kenny, TJ, and Pat. Paying attendees who participated in the evening's festivities included Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell, Police Commissioner John Timoney, PA Lieutenant Governor Mark Schwieker, PA Attorney General Mike Fisher, PA Auditor General Bob Casey, Philadelphia DA Lynne Abraham, and Joseph McGill, the former Assistant District Attorney who prosecuted Jamal for his brutal crime.

All proceeds from the dinner benefit "Justice for Police Officer Daniel Faulkner", a 501(c)(3) entity that exists to honor the life of Daniel Faulkner and spread the truth about the manner in which he died.
